ABC Bible Verses

Over the past year we have been going through a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet. We got a bit behind over the summer, and I am sure we have forgotten a few, so I think we will be starting over. I did want to make sure I got our list of verses to you all in case you wanted to follow along!

I created posters which I stick in a page protector and hang on our bulletin board while we are memorizing them. What I found best for helping the girls memorize verses is to have them repeat every couple words to start; then again having them repeat longer sections until they can say the whole verse. They can usually get them fairly quickly (within a week), but I haven't found a good way to get them to commit them to long term memory. Any tips on that are welcome!

When we went over the verses I also used the Handwriting Worksheet Maker to create worksheets for the girls to copy the verses.

To go along with each letter we also colored and discussed a picture from Pondered in My Heart focusing on a biblical virtue.

Hide the Baby (Moses) and Paper Baskets

Our Bible story this week was about Miriam and baby Moses.  The girls are familiar with the story of Moses in the basket (for a while there they would call any baby they saw in any sort of basket-like thing Moses).  Normally this story puts an emphasis on Moses and how god was able to protect him. Obviously an important point, but I wanted the girls to think a bit about Miriam and how she might have felt....annoyed, scared, worried, frustrated. We don't really know, but some of those are things the girls feel when dealing with Eli!

So after reading and discussing the story we played a little game called hide the baby.  First we tried using our Sock Monkey Game.

Basically one of the girls hid the baby, and we each chose a card to try and figure out what room the baby was in.

The cards say things like "in a room with a lamp" or "in a room with a desk."  Whoever hid the baby says yes or no, and you can put the card in the appropriate pile for reference later.  Some of the cards say "go look!" Whoever gets one of these gets to get up and look in the room of their choice until the timer runs out (I think it is a one minute timer).

 When the girls hid the baby, it was really pretty easy to find. When I hid the baby they had a hard time. We went through all the cards, and they still couldn't find it! They narrowed it down to the correct room though.  We went to the room and played the hot and cold game until they found it. So you could probably do the entire game using hot and cold if you wanted to.

After the girls got tired of the game we decided to try and make some paper heart baskets.  So we started with 2 sheets of construction paper and folded it in half.

Then we cut that in half to make long pieces of paper.

2 halves of the paper.  You can imagine they would be long rectangles.

Take one of each color and lay the in the shape of a heart with the folded side at the point of the heart (otherwise it won't make a basket).

I drew a pencil line across the pink where it met the purple, so I knew how far I could cut.

Lay both your rectangles together and cut strips starting at the folded side and going up to your line.  You can draw the lines on before you cut, so they are easy.  I did not do it, and we had some problems later.  Maybe even lines would have helped some. You can round the top now or once it is finished!

Now for the weaving part, because the strip is folded you will have to weave around and through the other strips.  The point is to make a basket, so the inside needs to be hollow.  It is confusing for me to read, but when you start looking at it in your hands it makes sense.  The fold creates two sides, so the other piece must go through the center.  I promise it will make sense when you try it!

Somehow we had two edge strips that would not fit! I have no idea how, was it because I didn't exactly measure my strips? I don't know, but I decided to cut them off.  With the girls baskets I waited until this point and had them cut the extra strip off while rounding off the top section.

This was actually frustrating for the girls because they kept getting stuck on how to weave each piece. So I made them little flat hearts they could weave easier.  Same idea, but it is flat, so you just weave over and under. I glued the top of the hearts to the paper to keep everything together.

They were pretty proud when they finished their flat hearts! And Bria even stuck one of her tiny babies in her heart basket!

Milkweed Babies

 Our Bible story this week was Sarah and Abraham and the birth if Isaac.  Again this story is familiar to the girls, but I did try to talk more about Sarah and how she would be feeling during it. This is something I am going to try to do as much as possible, in hopes that the girls will learn to see how others feel and learn to empathize. Since the main point of the story is the fulfillment of God's promise for a baby, we made babies!

I actually found these cute little milkweed babies a few months ago, and have kept my eye out for a chance to use them (and for some milkweed)!  This past weekend while driving I spotted some milkweed, and of course made Nathan turn around to grab some.  Amazingly my mom had these huge acorns that would work perfectly for heads instead of the little wooden balls. They even looked like they had hats on!

To make the bodies I looped a pipe cleaner around to form a tear drop shape.

 I used yarn to wrap around the pipe cleaners. I started by hot gluing one end of the yarn and then wrapping, gluing where needed. I went over mine twice to make sure it was all covered.

Then I nestled it into my milkweed pod and hot glued on my head,

Obviously when I let the girls make theirs I did the hot gluing, but they picked out their supplies and wrapped their yarn.  They wanted pom poms for their hats too.

They loved the little babies even wrapping them up in blankets.

Even Eli wanted one, but only if it had the pom pom on its hat. He seriously wouldn't take it without the pom pom. he handed it back to me and pointed at its hat. He was quite happy with it once he felt it was complete.

I think they turned out pretty sweet, and we still have plenty of acorns for Bria to feed to the squirrels. I just hope none of these have Acorn Weevils in them!

Fingerprint Noah's Ark

 Our Bible Story this week is another one the girls know well, Noah's Ark; they even read it in their little Easy reader Bible! Then we made our own Noah's ark with paper and paint.

I started by cutting out shapes for them to glue together for the ark.  A semicircle, rectangle, triangle, and a few small squarish shapes.

They glued their ark together how they wanted it, and then we added the animals.

I was inspired by Ed Emberley's Fingerprint Drawing Book

Although the book does not have many animals in it, I figured we could just make the prints and add the animal parts.  Most of the animals started with a oval (full fingerprint) for the body and circle (just the tip of the finger) for the head.

We tried to make stripes for a zebra.

Depending on what animal the girls wanted it to be determined how far apart I put the head and body. The horses the head was just a little ways and up from the body, the dog and lion were very close, and the giraffe was far away.  The girls had remember what they were wanting each one to be, so we could draw in the legs and stuff after they dried.

So once they were dried I drew one of each pair of animals, so the girls had something to go off of.  They added the features to the other animal in each pair.  Bria also decided she needed more animals (she was distracted by Eli before). So we added some more.

Once all the animals were complete the girls painted a rainbow over their ark.

The girls had a good time coming up with animals to add, and I am happy they tried to draw them themselves without complaining that they didn't look good. Sometimes they have a hard time when they can't get things perfect (I have no idea where they get that). Sarcasm aside, I think they turned out pretty cute!
